Dawen has been practicing consulting engineering in central and northern Virginia for over 17 years. Before he earned his Master Degree from Kansas State University, he worked as a mechanical engineer in a consulting engineering firm specialized in Cleanroom design in China. His project experience includes commercial offices, higher-education, airport terminal buildings, K-12 schools and research/teaching laboratories, Tier2/Tier 3 datacenters, museum galleries and cultural centers. Project size ranges from 2k S.F. office tenant upfit to over several million S.F. campuses. System types include geothermal system, chilled beam system, thermal storage system, variable air volume system (for commercial and laboratory applications), Variable Refrigerant Flow system and large scale central chiller plant. Before starting LSE, Dawen served as the Design Principal at a medium-size MEP consulting firm for 5 years.
Dawen is an active member of ASHRAE. He has served on various technical committees and standard committees. He currently serves as a TAC (Technical Activity Committee) member and is a voting member of GPC 41P – Design, Installation and Commissioning of Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems.
J.T. Smith, P.E., LEEP AP BD+C – Principal/Vice President
J.T. has over 25 years of experience in building construction industry. His experience includes building system design (HVAC and Plumbing systems), building system commissioning and project management. Projects he has designed include commercial office buildings, K-12 schools and university/colleges facilities. J.T. earned his LEED accreditation in 2004. Since then, he has completed over twenty-five LEED projects from Certified level to Platinum level.
J.T.’s recent focus has been on building Commissioning, Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning for LEED projects and Retro-commissioning on existing buildings. He has commissioned over (15) LEED buildings, including the first LEED Platinum building in Virginia that also qualifies for Historic Tax Credit.
